1136 Farbskizze

Acryl auf Leinwand 20 x 20 cm
Acrylics on canvas 7.9 x 7.9 inches
(Achtung: Bis Ende Okt. werden keine Bilder verschickt! FYI: No shipping till the end of Oct.)

Color Sketch
Our holidays are really pretty soon stepping at the doorway. Tomorrow we're leaving home. Today I loaded my color palette with the "usual suspects". Anyway, since I am mixing  only with the three primaries, it's not a big selection. For painting "en plein air" I have two additional greens at start.

1136 Wolken auf La Réunion

Acryl auf Leinwand 20 x 20 cm
Acrylics on canvas 7.9 x 7.9 inches

Clouds of La Réunion
Actually I wanted to get in the mood for the upcoming holidays. But then this picture came to me out of the stack. This picture showed the mountains of the small French island of La Réunion in the Indian Ocean . We had a great time hiking there in 2008.

Übermalt. Overpainted.

1135 Zoo Event

Penguins very neat and polite in watercolor on paper
Elephants cheerful and playful in watercolor on paper
Polar bears grumpy and nervously roaming on watercolor on paper

Yesterday there was a small zoo painting with my Wednesday Sketching pals.
Last week we exercised ourselves painting some horses. Penguins and elephants make good models too. They were patiently and friendly posing for us. The polar bears were misbehaving kids and jumped around wild and were scowling from one corner to another. Accordingly the sketches are shaky. So the bears should not be surprised to look like buffalos.

It's rare, and I don't want to blow my own trumpet...
But I managed the desired 50's atmosphere and the thunderstorm sky pretty good, right?

1125 Aromatics

Aquarell auf Hahnemühle Akademie Aquarell »Veneto« 325 g/m² • 62 x 48 cmWatercolor on Hahnemuhle »Veneto« 325 gms •  24.4 x 18.9 inches
Geplant für Ausstellung, danach verkäuflich. Planned for exhibition sale afterwards

Aromatics- this was the shop's name. Okay, not exactly, but something like this. It was in this French city whose name just won't happen to be remembered by me. Or was it in Belgium? I know that something was sold in this store or was it closed for renovation? Hey, but the weather was quite good, uhm- I think - or no, it just started to rain. One thing is for sure: It was spring or autumn.
In short: I need to insert some details into the overall picture before I can call it a day.

1124 Walkenried-Idylle

Acryl auf Leinwand 20 x 20 cm
Acrylics on canvas 7.9 x 7.9 inches

Unverkäufliche Studie. NFS.

Idyll of Walkenried
The subject is the cloister of the monastery Walkenried on an overcast day. I wanted to try what it looks like with structure paste underground. I like the ambiance of the picture. But I am not convinced of the irregular underground. Looks like a failure in the canvas.

1123 Kohlkopp

Acryl auf Leinwand 20 x 20 cm
Acrylics on canvas 7.9 x 7.9 inches

Cabbage
At least, when one of my webdesign customers sends the template for the autumn menu... But, say what, not only culinary I really like this season.
Because there is then so much to paint, to draw and to shoot there.
Of course, I'll only shoot with my camera.

Yesterday I was with some other members of the DAG/GWS (German Watercolour Society) in Dassel at  the »paper day« with Hahnemuhle. We enjoyed a complete factory tour. After a small lunch snack we went in medias res. We could test some of the best and latest watercolor papers and on site. Afterwards there was a lot of material for testing in the studio. A successful and instructive campaign of »our« watercolor club. Special thanks to Niko and Lars and of course the nice ladies and gentlemen at Hahenemühle for their perfect organization.

1116 Gegenlicht am Hafen

Acryl auf Aquarellpapier 300g/m² • 36 x 40 cm
Acrylics on watercolor paper 300gms •   14.2 x 15.7 inches
Das übermalte Aquarell 300g/m² • 36 x 48 cm
Overpainted watercolor on paper 300gms •  14.2 x 18.9 inches

Backlighted Harbor
At first I like to show you a watercolor that I painted on Wednesday at the Lister marina. It is the view from the bridge over the Midland Canal. I've painted this as a backlight study in the opposing blazing sun. But the result was poor and it didn't present what I was longing for.
To compensate, I have probably gotten a little sunburn ;)
Yesterday I've overpainted the watercolor with acrylics in the studio.
And here is the desired backlight effect which makes the picture threedimensional.

1115 Hafenatmosphäre

• Aquarell auf 450 g/m² Papier ca. 48 x 68 cm •
• Watercolor on Paper 450 g/m² approx. 19 x 27 inches •
Hier kaufen. Buy here.

Harbor Atmosphere
Today an harbor scene, I almost forgot to post .
I used this watercolor as template for my acrylic painting # 1096.
Unfortunately, the »Master of the Harbour« -the ancient crane- could not be recognized good enough.
If you want to bid on this painting, you'll get another one which is on the backside "for free"
(Backside = Painting #1107 On Anna Pond)

1114 Maxi

Acryl auf Leinwand 20 x 20 cm
Acrylics on canvas 7.9 x 7.9 inches

Geschenk. Gifted.

...actually, there is not blogpost like this.
Because as you probably know, I don't paint pets!
But if it is voluntary it's something else.
In addition, it is a gift (häppi börsdäi).
And Maxi was a real cutie.

1113 Schaut herauf in den Herbst

Acryl auf Leinwand 20 x 20 cm
Acrylics on canvas 7.9 x 7.9 inches

Hier kaufen. Buy here.

Mein Dank gebührt em inspirierenden Buch von James Gurney »Color and Light«.

Look up in Fall
Yes, another bad F-word... :)
The Linden have already started to color their leaves yellow. But actually I wanted to practice how to paint translucent light. The transmitted light makes the leaves bright chromatic yellow. Leaves in the shade are in the darkest green. In between, there are those that reflect the brown ground and those who are affected by the blue of the sky.
Thanks to James Gurney for his inspirational book »Color and Light«

1112 Kunst Instinkt

Acryl auf Aquarellpapier 300g/m² • 25 x 25 cm
Acrylics on watercolor paper 300gms •   9.8 x 9.8 inches

Was ist schön? Was ist Kunst?

Art Instinct
Today, an image with an almost philosophical claim.
A few years ago I read the interesting book »The Art Instinct« by Denis Dutton. Herein, the author tries to evolve a scientific analysis of whether there is an innate instinct for art. Among many gathered facts, what has surprised me the most is that a 44-percent-blue-landscape with kind of an African style with some mountains and some water is perceived as »beautiful« by the majority of mankind (whether Germans, Kenyans, Icelanders, Inuit, Russians, Ukrainians, Israelis, or Palestinians ...)
What is beautiful? What is art?
