Gestern sind wir spät abends angekommen und ziemlich müde ins Bett gefallen. 

Am nachmittag haben wir noch Trier besichtigt. 

Die Porta Nigra war eher enttäuschend (im Vergleich mit  der Pont du Gard). 

Aber der Dom hat mir gefallen.

Yesterday we arrived late at night and fell into bed pretty tired. 

Before, in the afternoon we visited Trier. 

The Porta Nigra was rather disappointing (in comparison to the Pont du Gard). 

But the cathedral has impressed me.

Wir haben eine weitere Nacht in Apt verbracht und am Morgen ins kleine Städtchen Saint-Saturnin-lès-Apt gefahren. Entgegen den Berichten in der lokalen Presse blieb unsere Urlaubsroute bisher vom Starkregen verschont. Andere südliche Provinzen hingegen wurden weggespült.

We spent another night in Apt and in the morning we visited the little town of Saint-Saturnin-lès-Apt Contrary to reports in the local press our vacation route so far had been spared from the heavy rain. Other southern provinces here in France however were washed away.

Unverkäufliche Studie. NFS.

Das Motiv ist der Kreuzgang des Klosters Walkenried im Harz an einem bewölkten Nachmittag. Ich wollte mal ausprobieren, wie das mit einer untermalten Struktur aussieht. Die Stimmung finde ich ganz gut wiedergegeben. Bin aber vom unregelmäßigen Untergrund nicht so überzeugt. Sieht wie ein Fehler in der Leinwand aus.

The subject is the cloister of the monastery Walkenried on an overcast day. I wanted to try what it looks like with structure paste underground. I like the ambiance of the picture.But I am not convinced of the irregular underground. Looks like a failure in the canvas.

Heute ein Bild mit einem fast philosophischen Anspruch.

Vor einigen Jahren las ich das interessante Buch »The Art Instinct« von Denis Dutton. Hierin versucht der Autor u.a. eine wissenschaftliche Analyse darüber zu erstellen, ob es einen angeborenen Instinkt für Kunst gibt. Unter vielen anderen zusammengetragenen Fakten, hat mich am meisten verwundert, dass das Bild einer afrikanisch anmutenden Landschaft mit Bergen und Wasser und einem 44%igen Blauanteil vom überwiegenden Teil der Menschheit (egal, ob Deutscher, Kenianer, Isländer, Eskimo, Russe, Ukrainer, Israeli, oder Palästinenser...) als »schön« empfunden wird. 

Was ist schön? Was ist Kunst?

Art Instinct 

Today, an image with an almost philosophical claim. 

A few years ago I read the interesting book »The Art Instinct« by Denis Dutton. Herein, the author tries to evolve a scientific analysis of whether there is an innate instinct for art. Among many gathered facts, what has surprised me the most is that a 44-percent-blue-landscape with kind of an African style with some mountains and some water is perceived as »beautiful« by the majority of mankind (whether Germans, Kenyans, Icelanders, Inuit, Russians, Ukrainians, Israelis, or Palestinians ...) 

What is beautiful? What is art?

Am Mittwoch haben wir unser Skizziertreffen trotz des Regenwetters draußen an der Nikolaikirche in Hannover Limmer veranstalten können. Die Sonne brach sich den Weg durch die dicken Wolken und eine diesige Schwüle mit feuchtem Kanalgeruch schwang sich durch die Lüfte.

Despite the rainy weather on Wednesday, we hold our weekly sketching meeting outside. The sun broke her way through the thick clouds and a hazy humidity and the smell of moist smell of canalization swung through the air.

Musste es doch noch nachschlagen, aber der figürlich, geometrische oder vegetabilisch gestaltete Rundbogen an Portalen wird als Archivolte bezeichnet. Eine dieser gebildhauerten Figuren ist wohl der Erzengel Gabriel. Na, wer hat ihn gefunden?

Where's Gabriel? 

I had to google this up, but the figurative, geometric or vegetable-shaped arch of portals is called archivolt. One of these sculpted figures is probably the archangel Gabriel. Will you find him?

Diese mallorquinische Stadt hat das schönes Santuari de San Salvador auf dem Berg. Und wenn man da wieder auf der Straße runtergeht kann man schön kucken und Fotos machen. Und Jahre später diese dann malen.

This Majorcan town has the beautiful Sanctuary of San Salvador on top of a hill. And when you stroll down the road, you'll have a beautiful sightseeing and you can take tons of photos to paint from, even years later.

Lange haben wir uns auf den gestrigen Klosterbesuch-Zeichentermin in Marienwerder gefreut. Und wir wurden nicht enttäuscht. Ein herzlicher Empfang, Aufenthalt und Abschied und auch glücklicherweise »kein Regen«. Die Zeit flog nur so dahin und ließ uns nur einige wenige Ansichten zeichnen. Wir möchten das auf jeden Fall im Herbst wiederholen. 

Ein besonderer Dank der freundlichen und ambitionierten Äbtissin! 

Convent

Since long we have been looking forward to visit the Marienwerder monastery. And we were not disappointed. A warm welcome, stay and departure and fortunately »no rain«. Time was fleeting (as always) and let us draw only a few sketches. We definitely want to repeat this in fall.
